ALL THAT GLITTERS ARE NOT GOLD

'All that glitters are not gold' phrase states that not to trust everything you see. Outward appearance can be significantly misleading. A person may pretend to be noble, hiding his defects. One cannot judge a person from his smiling face or cheerful appearance. Most of the time, they are covered by false masks, looks, and appearances. Thus, before making hasty judgments based on what seems to be, one should take time to try and peep behind the facade of make-believe sweetness and politeness. One should use wisdom and discretion to weigh the appearance against what lurks behind as truth. Then only one can learn to differentiate between gold and the rest that glitters like gold.

SUMMARY

Some moral stories and fables echo the same thoughts with the saying, 'Not everything that glitters are gold’. One such famous story is that of two friends Anil and Sunil.

Both the friends lived in a village. This was the first time that they were visiting the city. They were all very excited about their journey. They had planned to visit several places within the town and do a lot of shopping. Anil specifically wanted to buy a watch. He had been saving for this for a long time. He discussed with his friend his plan to buy a watch from the city when the passenger sitting next to him overheard their conversation.

He took out two gleaming watches from his bag and showed them to the two friends. Anil was captivated by the beauty of those watches. He decided to buy one of them. However, Sunil was a little sceptical about his decision. He could not trust the person selling the watches because he said that the shining strap of those watches was made of gold. He charged a heavy fee for the watches.

Sunil warns Anil not to buy the watch from the man as he suspected that he was lying. However, Anil was so attracted by the beauty of the watch that he did not listen to Sunil. He happily gave a large sum of money to the stranger in exchange for a watch.

After a few days, the clock stopped working. Anil took it to a nearby shop to get it repaired. He learned that his watch was made of a simple material that only shone like gold but was not precious at all. He realized that all his money had gone down the drain and was very disappointed. He regretted taking the hasty decision even after being warned by Sunil.

Since then, Anil has taken all the decisions very carefully after assessing all the pros and cons. This is how each of us should act in life because everything that glitters is not gold.

CONCLUSION

'All that glitter are not gold' is a warning to each one of us, especially those who make hasty decisions by looking at some object, situation, or person at the surface level. It’s a warning to those who look at the external beauty of things, instead of just analyzing their true worth. This is because not everything that attracts the eye can actually be good. Like there are many things that sparkle and shine but not all of them are as precious as gold.
